Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1

What makes a number plate road legal in the UK?

Accepted Answer

A road legal number plate must comply with the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 and meet BS AU 145e standard. It must display the correct font (Charles Wright), correct character spacing, show the GB identifier or national flag, and be made from reflective material — white at the front, yellow at the rear. All plates we supply are fully road legal and BS AU 145e certified.

Question 2

Are 3D, 4D, and 5D plates road legal?

Accepted Answer

Yes — 3D gel, 4D laser-cut acrylic, and 5D gel plates are all road legal provided they use the correct Charles Wright font, correct character sizing, and meet BS AU 145e. All our plates are manufactured to these standards. Show plates with non-standard fonts or sizes are not road legal and are sold for display purposes only.

Question 3

What is the difference between a show plate and a road legal plate?

Accepted Answer

Road legal plates must meet strict DVLA regulations including font, size, spacing, and material standards. Show plates are decorative and can use custom fonts, colours, or sizes — but they cannot be displayed on a vehicle used on public roads. We supply both; road legal plates are clearly marked and include the required BS AU 145e certification.

Question 4

What is BS AU 145e?

Accepted Answer

BS AU 145e is the British Standard for retroreflective number plate materials. It replaced BS AU 145d in 2021 and sets requirements for reflectivity, durability, and legibility. All road legal plates we supply meet this standard. You will see the BS AU 145e mark printed on the plate itself.

Question 9

What documents do I need to bring?

Accepted Answer

By law, we must verify your identity and your entitlement to the registration mark before supplying plates. You will need: (1) Proof of Identity — a valid passport, driving licence, or other government-issued photo ID; and (2) Proof of Entitlement — the vehicle's V5C logbook (registered keeper), a new keeper supplement, a certificate of entitlement (V750), or a retention document (V778). We cannot supply plates without both documents.

Question 10

I don't have my V5C — can I still get plates?

Accepted Answer

You must be able to prove entitlement to the registration mark. Acceptable alternatives to the V5C include a new keeper supplement (V5C/2), a certificate of entitlement (V750), or a retention document (V778). If you have recently purchased the vehicle and are waiting for the V5C, the new keeper supplement is sufficient. We cannot supply plates without proof of entitlement.

Question 11

How do I provide documents for an online order?

Accepted Answer

When ordering online, you will be prompted to enter your proof of identity and proof of entitlement reference numbers at checkout. We verify these before processing your order. For collection orders, please also bring the original documents when you collect.

Question 12

What plate styles do you offer?

Accepted Answer

We offer six road legal styles: Premium Printed (standard flat plate), 3D Gel (raised gel letters), 4D 3mm Laser Cut, 4D 5mm Laser Cut, 4D Gel (laser-cut letters with gel coating), and 5D Gel (premium layered effect). We also supply motorbike plates, trailer and 4x4 plates, and JDM/US import-style plates.

Question 13

Which plate style should I choose?

Accepted Answer

All styles are road legal. Visit our plate types pages for a full comparison.
